“Why would I let my child study there? The teacher is not a degree holder and didn’t even finish high school. What will she teach my child?”
These painful words greeted me in my first year of teaching at the Vision Himpossible Life Center.
I never dreamed of becoming a teacher. In fact, I refused the teachers’ training for ACE (Accelerated Christian Education) because my companions were all college graduates and I only finished second year high school. But through their persistence and trust in my potential, I passed with flying colors!
The first few years were challenging. Aside from the skepticism of many parents, the children were a handful!
There were kids who didn’t show up and I had to fetch them at home. Some arrived dirty, so we gave them baths and clean clothes to wear to class. We shared our food to those who waited hours for their parents to pick them up. And most difficult of all was, I contracted tuberculosis from one of the parents whom I accompanied to the doctor. We turned some of the lessons into fun games so the kids enjoy as they learn. Every child is unique, and I love how some are sweet and some play “hard to get.” I thank God for giving me the wisdom to guide them. Through it all, I am happy and grateful to be chosen for this ministry. It’s been fourteen years of learning academically and emotionally.
After much perseverance, I boast in the Lord that parents flock to our school every year to enroll their children. More than that, I now have a bigger family through these students whom I love as my own children, and their mothers who are like my own sisters.
Thank you, Vision Himpossible Ministries for your trust and encouragement. All glory to God who makes all things possible!
Teacher Jennifer Marcelino converted her living room into our first classroom in 2010. This gave birth to the Vision Himpossible Life Center, an educational outreach for indigent kids. She innovated teaching by incorporating lessons and drills into games. In spite of the fun, she is a strict disciplinarian. She meets with the parents once a week for “Family Talks,” a bible study and life group for parents. This once-reluctant teacher has surpassed expectations and continues to serve with genuine and sacrificial compassion.
