NURTURING COMMUNITY IN EVERY PART OF LIFE

Reflections On Building Community At Work, In Global Service, And At Home

When I think about nurturing community, I don’t see it as something tied to one role or place. It shows up across every part of my life, my work as an HR Director, my role in Vision Himpossible Ministries supporting nonprofit efforts, and at home with my family, including my partner, our 3-year old daughter Remi, and a baby boy on the way.

Each space looks different, but at the core, it’s the same: people want to feel seen, supported, and valued.

In my role as HR Director, I help care for a workplace community of up to 100 employees. A big part of that is simply being present, for everyday moments and high-pressure situations as well. Sometimes that means guiding employees through challenges, supporting leadership in difficult decisions, or stepping into tough conversations to make sure people feel respected and heard.

At the same time, I’m always trying to think about the bigger picture – how to create a culture where people feel safe and connected. That comes from communication, following through, and building consistency so people know what to expect and who they can rely on. In stressful moments, I try to be someone people can count on to stay calm and help talk things through. Trust isn’t built in one moment; it grows quietly over time through everyday interactions.

Beyond my HR role, I work closely with Vision Himpossible Ministries. Here, nurturing takes on a different, but just as meaningful form. Our work supports child education, feeding programs, community outreach, orphanages, and rescue efforts, primarily in the Philippines, while also supporting missionaries around the world. Even from a distance, I’ve learned that nurturing isn’t defined by proximity. It’s built through making sure people feel supported in the work they are doing.

At home is my most personal community. Life there is full in the best way. My partner and I are raising our energetic daughter while preparing to welcome our son. Nurturing here is quieter and more intentional. It’s found in routines, bedtime prayers, laughter, and choosing to be present. There are days when it feels like a lot, and I’m trying to show up the best I can in every area. But it’s also so rewarding. These are the moments that remind me why I care so much about the people and communities around me.

What I’ve come to realize is how connected these parts of my life are. Motherhood has made me more empathetic at work, it’s a constant reminder that everyone is carrying something we may not see. My work in HR has helped me stay grounded under pressure. And my nonprofit work experience continues to bring me back to service, humility, and perspective.

Balancing all of this isn’t always perfect. There are moments when it feels like too much and I’ve learned the importance of setting boundaries and taking the time to recharge. When you spend so much time nurturing others, you start to realize how important it is to also take care of yourself. Even small moments to reset can make a big difference in how you show up for everyone else.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about building strong communities, it’s this: start small and stay consistent. Show up. Listen. Follow through. People may not remember every action, but they will always remember how you made them feel.

At the end of the day, the legacy I hope to leave is simple, I want people to feel cared for and valued in every space I’ve been part of. Whether at work, in the communities I serve, or at home with my family, that’s what nurturing truly means to me.

ABOUT THE WRITER…

Jessica Villalobos

Jessica is not your average HR Director—she’s a cool HR Director (cue Mean Girls reference). She’s the perfect mix of people champion and company protector, making sure everyone’s thriving while keeping things running smoothly. When she’s not slaying HR, she’s in full momma bear mode with her daughter, binging podcasts like it’s her job, or sipping a very strong margarita (don’t @ her). Her guilty pleasures? Reality competition shows—RuPaul’s Drag Race to Hell’s Kitchen (yes, please). Oh, and don’t be shocked if you catch her completing high-speed missions in GTA 5—HR by day, getaway driver by night. Whatever Jessica’s doing, you can bet she’s giving it 100%… YEE HEE!
