DON’T GET HOT UNDER THE COLLAR

7 Tips to Keep Your Furry Friends Safe All Summer

As a French bulldog mom, I know firsthand how much Cookie loves to be anywhere with us, whether we’re just lounging at home (clingy much?) or on any trip. He is our little travel buddy, and my husband and I try to take him with us whenever we can. We took him to Comic Con San Diego, Downtown Santa Barbara and Breweries, and the beaches of Santa Monica to name a few. Though his adorable, squished face is such a funny delight (lol), I know it also makes him extra sensitive to the summer heat. And that my friends, is what we cannot allow to happen.

Don’t let your furry soulmate overheat! Here are 7 fun and easy ways I help Cookie stay cool, comfortable, and happy all season long.

1. The “Paws on the Pavement” Test: Before we step out for a walk, I always place the back of my hand on the ground for five seconds. If it’s too hot for me, it’s definitely too hot for Cookie’s paws. When we’re in places like Santa Monica, we stick to the grassy areas of Palisades Park or the cooler, quieter spots along the boardwalk. I try to aim for our walks at sunrise or sunset.

2. Ice, Ice, Baby: I love adding blueberry ice cubes to Cookie’s water bowl to make it an irresistible, frosty treat. When we’re on the go in San Diego, I always have a portable water bottle and a travel bowl for him.

3. The Splash Zone: I’ve set up a small, shallow kiddie pool in our patio for Cookie. It’s a great way for him to get his paws wet and cool down without the risks of deep water.

4. DIY Pupsicles: Who doesn’t love a popsicle? I blend a banana with some plain greek yogurt (super good for their gut!) or peanut butter (making sure it’s xylitol-free!), pour it into a silicone mold, and freeze it. It’s an instant cool-down snack for Cookie after a walk in Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone.

5. Cooling Gear is Our New Best Friend: I’ve invested in a cooling mat that Cookie can lie on after hot summer walkies and a bandana. These products use special gels or fabrics to help draw heat away from her body. They’re a lifesaver on warmer days!

6. Be Prepared with First Aid: Accidents can happen, even on the sunniest days. That’s why I always keep a well-stocked first aid kit for Cookie in the car, at home, and in his travel bag. A reliable kit, like the Trails N’ Tails dog first aid kit, has everything I need to handle minor scrapes, cuts, or other unexpected issues on the go. Having a kit handy gives me peace of mind, knowing I can provide immediate care until we can get to a vet if needed.

7. Know the Warning Signs: I always keep a close eye on Cookie for signs of heatstroke, like excessive panting, drooling, wobbly legs, or a bright red tongue. If I ever see these, I know it’s a heatstroke warning! I get him to a cool place, wet her down with cool water (not freezing), and call my vet immediately.

Remember to all dog parents out there: stay safe, stay cool, and have a fantastic summer with your furry best friend!
